Baekdu Mountain on the border between North Korea and China
Baekdu Mountain (白頭山), the highest mountain (2,744m) on the Korean Peninsula, is a volcano on the border between North Korea and China. Its peak is covered with snow for eight months of the year and is covered with white pumice stones, hence its name, meaning "white-headed mountain."
In traditional geomancy, Baekdudaegan is the basic mountain range of the Korean peninsula, extending from Baekdu Mountain to Jiri Mountain. Among them, Baekdu Mountain is considered the starting point of all mountain ranges, and has been revered as a sacred mountain by the Korean people since ancient times, establishing itself as the spiritual mountain of the people.
The highest peak of Baekdu Mountain is Janggunbong (將軍峰), and there are 16 peaks over 2,500m, including Hyangdobong and Ssangmujigaebong. Of these, 7 are managed by China and 9 are managed by North Korea. At the summit is a caldera lake called Cheonji (天池).
The weather on Baekdu Mountain changes drastically throughout the year due to its high latitude and altitude, with snow, clouds, fog, heavy rain, and strong winds. There is even a joke that says, "It is hard to see the heavens and earth twice if you climb a hundred times." The weather changes rapidly dozens of times a day, so much so that seeing the heavens and earth on Baekdu Mountain on a good day is considered lucky.
In China, it is called Changbai Mountain (长白山, Chángbái shān), and on March 27, 2024, UNESCO newly certified the Chinese part of Baekdu Mountain as a Global Geopark under the name of 'Changbai Mountain'.
